Alice In Chains without Layne (or Mike) is like Nirvana without Kurt. Or Mother Love Bone without Andrew. Or...

I used to think like that, but I really like Hollow.. well, the whole album really. But perhaps they should've used a different name.

Oh, Cantrell was always the true talent and driving force behind the band... but... it's not the same without Layne.

I agree with you, won't ever argue about that. The reason I chose that tune was because so many people say stuff like "pffsj.. they don't have this and that musician anymore.. they suck" when the truth is that they still made good music. Take Iron Maiden or AC/DC, Iron Maiden was great with Di'Anno, better with Dickinson.. but noone would say they suck with Bayley on lead vocals. Was AC/DC better with Bon Scott? I'm not so sure :)

I had the good fortune to see AIC live early on, and Facelift and Dirt changed my life in terms of musical perspectives and appreciation.
But I quickly realized that as talented as Layne was, that Jerry was (is) the genius behind the scenes. But I knew AIC as Layne, Jerry, Sean and Mike and without that lineup, it's really hard to see them as being AIC.
I loved the darkness that Layne brought, and I appreciate that some people can change a band for the better (we could probably start a war over Cliff Burton vs Jason Newsted) or least without inexorably changing the band.

I very much understand what you mean. I was never a huge AIC fan, so I should perhaps not speak about it, I was more a Jane's Addiction, Nirvana and Soundgarden fan at the time.

You know the history and appreciate the music. It doesn't mean your opinions aren't valid. =P comment away.
I was very much a fan of the Seattle scene at the time, and caught the wave early (Mother Love Bone, Mudhoney, etc) and watched it grow, expand and slowly fade away.

I'm guessing you're a few years older than me (late thirties/early forties), and you're from the US, it stands to reason you followed the scene closer than me :) I'm more of a black/death metal and Scandipunk guy :)

Nearly 40, lived in the States my whole life, first concert I saw on my own was seeing Metallica tour for the Black Album (I was 16, it was awesome, then I saw AIC, Megadeth, Pantera, NIN, Fugazi, Ministry and so many other concerts I have probably forgotten some of them by now).
I grew up with some very varied musical tastes, which have stayed with me to this day. Metal, Pop, Industrial, Goth, Bluegrass...
